Traumatic Injuries:
Treatment begins with a thorough evaluation by all participating disciplines. Together with the patient and their family, a treatment plan is developed. This plan includes the patient’s personal goals, concerns and treatment preferences. Throughout the medical rehabilitation program, patients are assisted in becoming as independent as possible in mobility and self-care activities. Advanced technology tools are used to address any problems with speech, reading comprehension and other language disorders.

Spinal Cord Injuries:
Today the Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital’s 26-bed SCI (Spinal Cord Injury) rehabilitation unit is fully credentialed by the State of Florida and CARF for acute and rehabilitative care of children and adults with spinal cord injuries. Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital is also one of the four designated by Florida's Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services (HRS) for acute and rehabilitative care for persons with spinal cord injuries.
Rehabilitation services begin with a thorough evaluation to identify patients with SCI needs and determine the most effective program. Patients are an integral part of the treatment planning process and provide input regarding their personal goals and treatment preferences. Throughout the rehabilitation program, patients with SCI become as independent as possible in mobility and self-care activities. Advanced technology is used to address environmental and mobility challenges. Peer interaction is another important component of Jackson’s SCI program. Community re-integration is a focal point of the SCI rehabilitation program. Patients are given the opportunity to practice learned skills in real-life situations, supported by staff experienced in the special challenges encountered by SCI patients. Therapists conduct home visits, when appropriate, to recommend modifications for accessibility. After their hospital stay, patients continue to receive care and support services in an outpatient setting. Patients with spinal cord injuries may qualify for research programs at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, located on the UM/Jackson Memorial Medical Center campus.

Traumatic Brain Injuries:
Responding to a growing need in the community, Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital developed a specialized Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) program in 1984. The Jackson Rehabilitation Hospital team has achieved a high level of professional expertise in this challenging field. Patients and their families are closely involved in the evaluation and treatment planning to determine the direction of their program. Personal goals, concerns and treatment preferences are included in the planning process.
Throughout the rehabilitation program, patients with TBI become as independent as possible in mobility and self-care activities. Advanced technology tools are used to address any problems with speech, reading comprehension and other language disorders. For some patients, group therapy may be utilized to overcome cognitive deficits and develop compensatory strategies.
Jackson's TBI rehabilitation program assists with the community re-entry process. The professional team provides patients with opportunities to practice learned skills in real-life supervised situations, supported by staff experienced in the special challenges encountered by TBI patients. Therapists conduct home visits, when appropriate, to recommend modifications for accessibility. Patients receive follow-up rehabilitation and support services in an outpatient setting.

Burn Injuries:
The treatment of patients recovering from burn injuries requires special skills. The UM/JM Burn Center has been a focal point of care and rehabilitation for thousands of children, adolescents, and adults for over 40 years. Critical burn cases from Florida, the Caribbean and Latin America are referred to the Burn Center on a regular basis due to the expertise of our Burn Center team.
After patients are released from the Burn Unit, many are transferred to the Jackson Rehabilitation Center, where they are evaluated to identify their specific needs and to determine their most effective treatment program. Patients with burn injuries may require a long rehabilitative period and are involved throughout this process, becoming as independent as possible in mobility and self-care activities. Extensive support is provided to address both physical and emotional pain issues.
