UF Health Shands Rehab Hospital is a 40-bed acute rehab hospital for patients who have suffered strokes, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations, burns or major joint replacements. UF Health Shands Rehab Hospital brings together a multi-disciplinary team of University of Florida and community physicians specially trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation, Shands therapists, nurses and other healthcare professionals, all dedicated to helping people improve the quality of their lives while dealing with major traumas, injuries or diseases.
Once a patient is admitted to UF Health Shands Rehab Hospital, therapy needs are determined by rehab specialists. Working closely with you and your family, the team, which includes physiatrists, rehab nurses and therapists, will establish your initial goals and a treatment plan to achieve them. During the course of your care, these goals may be revised to reflect your progress and personal choices. In addition, our experiences rehab nurses provide specialized nursing care to teach you how your body functions after your injury or illness. They also will assist you in practicing life skills, from grooming and getting dressed to managing your medication.
UF Health Shands Rehab Hospital is one of only 10 rehabilitations centers in the state designated by the Florida Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program as a brain and spinal cord injury rehabilitation center. UF Health Shands Rehab Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission, the leading organization that sets the standards of care for rehab programs and hospitals across the country. UF Health Shands Rehab Hospital also is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for comprehensive inpatient rehab, stroke, brain injury and spinal cord injury.
In addition, our hospital requires a minimum of three hours a day of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and/or speech therapy, at least five days per week.
